  • About the journal

The Iranian-Islamic city is more than an assemblage of buildings, spaces, and historical heritage. It represents the manifestation of a cultural and civilizational tradition in the realm of everyday life—where Islamic worldviews, values, and meanings intersect with Iranian history, culture, and environmental contexts, and find expression in spatial organization, ways of inhabiting, social relations, perception, and human experience of the city.

The Quarterly Journal of Iranian-Islamic City Studies is founded on the premise that understanding the Iranian-Islamic city requires attention not only to its physical and spatial structures, but also to its cultural, social, symbolic, perceptual, and lived dimensions. The journal therefore provides an interdisciplinary platform for rethinking the city and fostering dialogue between Islamic thought and heritage, Iranian intellectual and cultural traditions, and contemporary theories and transformations. Rather than treating the Iranian-Islamic city as a fixed model of the past to be reproduced, the journal approaches it as a living, dynamic, and evolving body of knowledge and experience. It seeks to explore how the intellectual, cultural, and spatial resources of the Iranian-Islamic tradition can contribute to understanding contemporary urban challenges, generating new knowledge, and opening alternative horizons for urban thought and practice.

The journal ultimately aims to advance a multidimensional understanding of the Iranian-Islamic city and to encourage theoretical, methodological, and practical approaches capable of establishing creative connections between identity, meaning, and cultural values on the one hand, and the realities and demands of contemporary urban life on the other.
